It is said that you become like the people you spend most time with. You will come across a lot of people in life, each with distinct characters, traits, and personalities. However it is important that you wisely choose the company you keep. Because, who you surround yourself with plays an important role in who you become.
Aren’t our communities too loud? From the thumping basslines emanating from cruising cars to to sirens screaming through city streets to the neighbor’s dog’s incessant barking, don’t we all deserve a little peace and quiet these days? Increasing the volume to a cacophonous (LC triangle—recommend you look-up if you don’t know definition) roar makes life stressful and is often a reflection of our response to these stressors . When we communicate with one another, shouting doesn’t have to be our default volume setting.
We’re all annoyed by people who act with complete disregard to others around them. When we’re tired, when we’re stressed, when we feel our buttons being pushed, we respond by shouting.
Ok, here’s a crazy concept…reading doesn’t have to be work. It can be fun. And we should all do it more, for so, so many reasons.
But did you ever think of reading as a vacation? Reading is an escape! It helps you escape life’s everyday hustle and bustle, shut out the noise. It transports you to lands far away without having to cough up the airfare. It can take you back in time without a machine or let you into somebody else’s experience without telepathic powers. And it’s cheap or free if you access your reading materials—whether a book, magazine or newspaper, or the Internet—at your local library.
